Miguel Ángel Calderón (Madrid, 1994) is a visual artist and cinematographer. Raised in both Spain and Peru, he then moved to the USA to study at the University of Kansas. After starting a degree in computer science, he obtained a B.A. in Fine Arts. He lives and works in Madrid.
His art work is based on creating experiences with time-based media –such as film, performance, sound and digital animation– that question our mechanisms of belief and explore the ways in which we see ourselves within the social entities we inhabit. Being born in Spain to Peruvian parents, he’s interested in topics such as identity, solitude and memory. He seeks to examine the relationships —lived, remembered, and imagined— we have with our relatives in this life or in others, with the intention to embrace uncertainty and welcome deceit.
As a cinematographer, he has worked for museums and cultural institutions in New York, in documentary productions shot in Spain and for clients such as: FIFA, Johnson & Johnson, Matterport, Right to Dream, among others.
His films and animations have been presented in exhibitions, cultural centers and film festivals in New York, Madrid, Sao Paulo, Moscow, Chicago and Calcutta, among others. He has been an artist-in-residence at Centro de Residencias Artísticas, Matadero Madrid.
